History

The Bushika Integrated Area Cooperative Enterprise (BIACE) is a secondary-level farmer cooperative founded in May 2010 in Bududa District, Uganda. Initially comprising 10 primary societies, it was officially registered in 2015 and received permanent certification in 2017. BIACE now includes 22 primary cooperatives, with three certified for Fairtrade and Organic coffee production, representing 3,040 smallholder farmers, of whom 2,015 grow coffee.

BIACE collaborates with local, national, and international partners, including farmer institutions, the District Government, and NGOs, to support community development. Its activities align with Uganda’s National Development Plan and the Uganda Coffee Development Authority, focusing on poverty reduction, increased production, and value addition for smallholder farmers.

Farmer engagement

Social responsibility initiatives include protected springs, bridges, and toilets; constructing energy-efficient cooking stoves; promoting the forest garden approach; and engaging in carbon credits, and financing.

Mission

To enhance production, collective marketing, and value addition in coffee and other value chains among cooperative members, fostering a sustainable supply of quality products, higher revenues, increased member incomes, and improved livelihoods.

History

Mt Elgon Agroforestry Communities Cooperative Enterprise Ltd (MEACCE) is a farmer- owned Secondary level organization owned by 14 primaries with a combined membership of 3,832 farmers (796 females) that produces certified Fairtrade Organic Washed Bugisu Arabica and Conventional Robusta Coffee grown on the slopes of Mt Elgon and around the Nile River with the mandate to increase farmer household income.

Our vision is to have a socially and economically thriving community within a sustainable environment and our strategy is not to trade in members’ produce but to help members market their products to their advantage.

Goal

The ultimate goal of MEACCE Ltd is to ensure that the proceeds and premiums generated from the sale of our members’ coffee are invested in community development projects that are geared towards improving their standards of living, climate change adaptation and mitigation as well as promoting gender equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) plus safeguarding people in all aspects of economy and governance.

History

Founded on January 1, 2019, with 65 shareholders, Bwindi Coffee Growers Cooperative Ltd has grown to 577 members, including 459 men, 118 women, and 90 youth under 30. Operating near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, it promotes coffee cultivation, supporting local livelihoods through the coffee value chain.

History

The Organization is registered to operate in the 7 districts on and around Mt. Rwenzori including Kasese, Bunyangabu, Kabarole, Rubirizi, Ntoroko, Bundibugyo and Kamwenge.

The purpose of forming Mt. Rwenzori Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union was to establish farmer managed production and marketing system that will help coffee farmers gain what their effort is worth in the coffee value chain.

Leadership / organizational structure

The Union operates on cooperative principles, governed by a General Assembly with three delegates per member society. The Assembly elects a nine-member Board of Directors, which appoints technical staff to manage daily operations.

A team of five experienced staff ensures high-quality coffee production through excellent field, processing, and management practices.

History

Mount Elgon Coffee and Honey Cooperative Society Ltd. is a vibrant, member-driven cooperative based in Uganda’s Mount Elgon region. We combine coffee cultivation with beekeeping to produce exceptional coffee and honey while uplifting the BAMASABA/GISHU communities. We are committed to climate-smart practices that promote sustainability and support our local ecosystems. Following organic and fairtrade standards ensures our coffee and honey meet the highest quality and ethical standards.

Leadership / organizational structure

  • AGM, Board, Supervisory committee, premium committee and management committee. Steering the cooperative´s strategic and day-to-day operations of the coop affairs
  • The General Assembly is made up of zonal and group representatives, elects the Board members during the Annual General Meeting.
  • The Board appoints the General Manager, who oversees the hiring and management of the team. The General manager is supported by the accountant, Quality, Marketing and extension officers. The community-based trainers support mobilization and act as quality controllers.)

To equip smallholder coffee and honey farmers with the skills and knowledge needed to improve production, using a Community-Based Trainer (CBT) extension model that fosters education and innovation.

  • Constructed a coffee storage facility and upgraded machinery.

  • Brought on board additional partners, including Agri-Terra and MARKUP under ITC.

History

Busongora County Joint Farmers’ Cooperative Society Limited (BCJFCS) is a member owned producer cooperative organization founded in 2003, to collect and market members’ coffee. The cooperative established in May 2003, first as a community-based organization (CBO), and has undergone several transition processes until when it was legally registered under the Co-operative Societies Amended Act, 2020 on 29th March 2021 as a primary Society.

What makes Busongara different?

  • 75% of Busongora´s farmers are women and the chair of the board is a woman
  • Busongora´s members farm on the slopes of Rwenzori Mountains in an area with great potential for tourism. In partnership with WWF, the cooperative established a centre for tourists where they can learn about coffee production. They also have mountain guides that lead treks in the high mountains.

The Mt Rwenzori Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Union is located in the Kasese district, in the Rwenzori region of western Uganda. MRCFCU was founded in 2014 and formally registered in 2018. It currently consists of 25 primary societies and local groups, with 1,254 active members who are dedicated to the production of coffee.

With support from Progreso MRCFCU is strengthening its capacity, has become Fairtrade certified, has built micro washing stations and is preparing to direct export high-quality coffee.
