We are pleased to welcome a new colleague, Phiona Nakusi to the Progreso team, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge from nearly two decades in the coffee industry.
Her journey in coffee began 18 years ago and has included a range of roles and achievements. Between 2007 and 2017, she worked at Gumutindo Coffee Cooperative Enterprise Ltd (GCCE), where she contributed to discussions and planning efforts aimed at improving the cooperative’s business operations. From 2017 to 2020, she served as General Manager at Mountain Harvest (MH), where her work supported the endorsement of the first impact investment in Uganda by the Investment Committee of Lutheran World Relief in 2017.
She has also been involved with Zombo Coffee Partners (ZCP), helping to shape their organic conversion program and launching their roast and ground coffee product.
Joining Progreso
Her connection to Progreso dates back to her time at Gumutindo, where she first learned about the organization through interactions with Mr. Kalema. In 2022, she met Janet and Andy Carlton during a field visit to cooperatives in Mbale. A meeting with Imke Straaten, Progreso’s Program Manager for Africa, in August 2024 further strengthened this connection. Following a successful application and interview process, she officially joined Progreso and is eager to contribute to its mission.
Goals and Vision
Her goal at Progreso is to support producer partners in enhancing the quality of their products and accessing better markets. She plans to collaborate with Progreso’s staff, consultants, and cooperative leadership to develop systems that promote sustainable business practices, benefiting cooperative members and their communities.
Personal Background
In addition to her professional work, she is a mother of three, including twins, and an active member of the Rotary Club of Mbale City.
We are looking forward to working together and leveraging her expertise.
