Founded in 1999, the Multisectoral Cooperative of Certified Organic Coffee Producers Las Segovias R.L. (PROCOCER) was created by smallholder farmers in Nicaragua’s Nueva Segovia region who wanted to strengthen their livelihoods by working together and adding greater value to their coffee.
Today, PROCOCER works with producers across the municipalities of Jalapa, El Jícaro, Ciudad Antigua and Murra. Organic coffee is at the heart of the cooperative’s work, with farmers producing at altitudes of around 900–1,250 metres. Their coffees are associated with sweet, chocolatey profiles and are marketed to buyers who value organic and Fairtrade production.
PROCOCER supports its members throughout the value chain, from technical assistance and organic farming practices to coffee collection and commercialization. Its collection centre in Jalapa and demonstration farm in Santa Martha provide spaces where producers can learn, experiment with organic practices and strengthen their production systems. The cooperative also produces organic fertilizers on a small scale.
By connecting farmers with differentiated markets, PROCOCER aims to improve coffee quality, productivity and family incomes while promoting better social and environmental conditions on farms.
The cooperative is certified for Fairtrade and organic production and promotes Good Agricultural Practices through IPSA. Beyond coffee, PROCOCER is committed to strengthening producer organizations and encouraging more equitable participation between women and men in the communities it serves.
