COOPAC
The Rubavu area has been and is still very popular for coffee growing. The composition of soil and the climate gives an output of high quality coffee. The area has a dense concentration of coffee farmers and as a consequence also of cooperatives and traders.
This competition can be met by COOPAC-UNION by having excellent relationships with local producers, supported by obtaining high prices. The investment in high quality washing stations contributed to this. The social program of COOPAC-UNION in the area supports the good relationship.
COOPAC-UNION members and primary cooperatives produce fully washed parchment coffee of the Arabica species of the highly regarded ‘Bourbon Mayaguez’ variety. To increase the production, COOPAC-UNION asks its members to have each at least 70 coffee trees.
The principal production unit and technology is the coffee washing station which takes freshly picked coffee cherries and transform them into parchment coffee. Being granted with the FLO certificate (Fair Trade Labelling Organizations International) it allows COOPAC UNION to enter markets that will offer advantages being minimum price levels and the FLO premiums. COOPAC hope to achieve 1.262 MT by the end of the year 2010.
COOPAC UNION is participating in international contests. Many times it has been rewarded with topmost positions in African contests (EAFCA). Through its website www.coopac.com it keeps its customers and prospects up to date about its performance and in return it receives many propositions from individuals and companies from all over the world.
