Organisation Description
Community Organised Farmers From Elgon- Arabica, Coffee Uganda Programme
COFFE A CUP Cooperative Ltd is a second grade cooperate founded in 2005, the cooperative has a registered membership of 1200 households with 75% of our farms under Arabica coffee cultivation.
COFFE A CUP applied for Fairtrade certificate in 2009. The members are located in the lower slopes of Mount Elgon, Uganda's highest mountain which reaches 4,321 metres (14,200 feet) at its peak, and about 270km from the Kampala the capital City.
The rich, fertile volcanic soil and subtropical climate are ideal for growing high quality Arabica coffee. Farmers cultivate small farms, known as Liswa, of average 2 to 3 acres (at altitude 2,000 to 3,500 above sea level) Inter-cropping improves soil fertility, helps prevent soil erosion and provides shade to the coffee trees.
Members of COFFE A CUP attend quality improvement seminars and practice traditional cultivation and processing methods to ensure the highest quality crop. These include good pruning, picking and drying techniques, the use of organic fertilisers (Composed manure) and terracing to prevent soil erosion and water run-off.
